Bangkok's new international and domestic airport. Suvarnabhumi (pronounced su-wan-na-poom) means "Golden Land" and was the name conferred by His Majesty the King of Thailand at an auspicious foundation stone laying ceremony on January 19, 2002.

Located on an 8,000-acre (20,000 rais) sit in Samut Prakarn province, about 25 kilometers east of Bangkok, Suvarnabhumi airport and a hub for travel in South-East Asia.

Suvarnabhumi has two parallel runways - 4,000m and 3,700m long - already in place and able to support a total capacity of 76 flights per hour. Both domestic and international flights will share the terminal but will be assigned different parts of the concourse. The initial phase of construction will allow for 45 million passengers per year, while further expansion phases will see the addition of two more runways enabling 100 million upon full development. There are 120 aircraft parking days, 10 of which can accommodate the new giant of the skies - the Airbus A380.

Every aspect of Suvarnabhumi Airport has been designed to speed up clearance with a total of 120 immigration desks and 22 luggage carousels. There are fast-track channels for premium passengers, plus personalised services for unaccompanied children, and those with priority needs. Duty-free shopping is available in the baggage hall, baggage trolleys are free of charge and after customs is an assortment of money changers, hotel-booking desks, travel agents and car-rental desks.

For passengers in transit or on connecting flights at Suvarnabhumi Airport, there are fast, efficient ticketing options and seamless transfer operations. Lavish prospects for refreshments, shopping or relaxation will enhance any stopover.

AIRPORT TRANSFERS

For the 25-kilometre journey along newly constructed four-lane express highways into the city, travellers have the choice between THAI'S luxurious limousine service, public metered taxis or scheduled buses.

It is accessible via five routes, as follows :-

1) North Access
An 8-lane elevated road linking Bangkok-Chonburi highway leading to the passenger terminal.

2) Northwest Access
A 6-lane elevated road linking an elevated way from Romklao and King Kaew Road.

3) South Access
An 4-lane road linking Bangna-Trat highway and the Burabhavithee (East Route) Expressway.

4) Northeast Access
A 4-lane road linking On Nuch Road.
5) West Access
A 4-lane road linking King Kaew Road.

City Rail Link
In addition, a city rail link between Phayathai-Makkasan and Suvarnabhumi Airport will be provided by the State Railway of Thailand. The rail link will be available in 2007.

The airport is located in Racha Thewa in the Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan province, 30 kilometers east of Bangkok.

Capacity
The airport has 2 parallel runways (60 m. wide, 4,000 m. and 3700 m. long) and 2 parallel taxiways to accommodate simultaneous departures and arrivals. It has a total of 120 parking bays (51 with contact gates and 69 remote gates) and 5 of these are capable of accommodating the Airbus A380 aircraft. With a capacity of handling 76 flight operations per hour, both international and domestic flights will share the airport terminal but will be assigned to different parts of the concourse. In the initial phase of construction, it will be capable of handling 45 million passengers and 3 million tonnes of cargo per year. Between the airport hotel and the terminal building are the two 5-storey car park buildings with a combined capacity of 5,000 cars.

Airport Hotel
Above the underground rail link station and in front of the passenger terminal building is the 600-room hotel operated by Accor Group under the Novotel brand.
Long-term plans
Long-term plans for four runways flanking two main terminals and two satellite buildings with a combined capacity capable of handling up to 100 million passengers and 6.4 million tonnes of cargo a year are on the drawing board. The second phase of airport expansion involving the construction of a satellite building south of the main terminal is expected to begin 3 to 5 years after the completion of the first main terminal.

  Bangkok Airport Shuttle Bus Service

Free shuttle bus service is provided for passengers and airport staff. Expess route connects the main terminal directly to the transport center. Ordinary route connects to other airport facilities. For passenger convenience shuttle buses serving Suvarnabhumi airport are low-floor type.

Shuttle Bus Public Taxi Limousine Car Rental Airport Express Public Bus

Suvarnabhumi Airport is located on a 3,100 ha site in the Samut Prakarn province of Thailand at Nong Ngu Hao (Nongnughao translated as Cobra Swamp), 30km east of Bangkok. Road access to the new airport will be provided by a series of new highways connected to Bangkok's existing outer ring road. The main access road is an elevated 2 x 5 lane road that leads from the passenger terminal through the northern part of the site to the new Bangkok–Chonburi highway.

The construction of the City Airport Terminal in Makkasan and a 28.6 km high-speed rail link to the new airport started in July 2005 and are planned for completion in November 2007. The airport express, informally known as the Pink Line and operated jointly with SRT's planned Red Line commuter service, will connect with the BTS Sukhumvit Line and MRT Blue Line at Phaya Thai and Phetchaburi stations respectively, offering airport-bound passengers a fast 15-minute limited stop journey from the city

Public taxis can be found on Level 2 (Arrivals). Alternatively take a shuttle bus (Express route)
to the Transport Center taxi stand.

  •  Passenger drop off at Departures (level 4 - outer curb).

To get a limousine contact the "Limousine Service Counter" at the Arrivals level (2nd floor). Limousine pick up area is at the Arrivals Level (outer curb).

Bangkok Airport Car Rental Service

To get a rental car contact "Car Rental" service counter at the Arrivals level (2nd floor)
and take a Shuttle Bus (Express Route) to the Transport Center to pick your rental car.

  •  Car rental services at the Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport are provided by international and local operators.
  •  Rental car drop-off is located at the Rental Center at the Transportation Center.
  Bangkok Airport Express

Airport Express provides air-conditioned bus service between Suvarnabhumi Airport and first-class Bangkok hotels.

Airport Express operates 4 bus routes to downtown. The cost is 150 baht for entire route.
